2014 Toy Drive

Yes...we even participate in other community projects!   We contributed toys to the local toy drive in Groesbeck.   I'd say we did a pretty good job!

Left to Right:  Front row: Cathy, Sherry, Cathy, Paula, BJ and Ann. Second row: Cindi, Carolyn, Zeke, Deanna, Joanne, Linda and Jane.

Our first community service...Windsor Manor Health Care ResidenceL

Amid the mud and muck of April, the LCMG updated the facility's flower bed around their sign, as well as adding some native plants to the side of the portico which captured most of the morning and mid-day sun.

Plant propagation and our first plant sale...

Carolyn and Ann....do we really know what we are doing???

Looking serious aren't they?   One of the group's favorite classes was on plant propagation, presented by Ima Jean, a MG from Waco.  She provided a multitude of plant varieties for us to practice with.

Here are a couple of photographs from our first plant sale...OMG...such a windy day...the set up crew was besieged with wayward canopies flapping every which way...that day we learned...how to tie down a canopy!

We provided 15 varieties of deer resistant plants,
along with pocket-size books about native plants,
their habitats, sun or shade, wet or dry...etc.

We're looking forward to our next plant sale on April 25, 2015, where we will correct our mistakes and move forward with a wide variety of plants for spring and summer plantings!  The locations will be shared soon.. In addition, on April 18th, we will be selling herbs in the empty lot next to Tractor Supply in Mexia.
Come join us both days and bring your checkbooks!

About Us!

The inaugural class (Class of 2015) of the Limestone Master Gardeners was organized under the leadership of Jane Schlitt in January 2013.  Limestone County,  located approximately 1 hour east of Waco consists of mainly ranch land, some farming and 2 recreational lakes.

The Master Gardener Program works under the auspices of the Texas A&M University AgriLife Program, which is coordinated by the local county extension agent David Groesch.  The objectives of the Master Gardener Program include sharing information with individuals and groups in our county, develop and enhance community projects related to horticulture, and supporting local schools and youth groups by providing programs on horticulture-related topics, to include water conservation and pollination, among others.  Additionally, Jane has presented to Lions Clubs in Groesbeck and Mexia on a variety of topics, along with information about Master Gardeners.

The class is a 2 year commitment, with the first year requiring 50 hours of classroom topics such as botany 101, soil preparation, plant propagation and composting, just to name a few.  The second year requires each gardener to participate in 50 hours of volunteer service. Our group alone has established relationships with the city of Groesbeck to manage Hawkins Park plantings, Limestone County Habitat for Humanity, Fort Parker State Park and the historic Confederate Reunion Grounds.  In addition, programs have been presented to most of the county school districts.  The Class of 2017 recently met for the first time.  Though none of us profess to being experts, we are eager to share our enthusiam and knowledge, right along with learning with them.

Through this blog, wehope you will enjoy the variety of activies in which we participate.  As you will see, friendships are born and shared, sprinkled with laughter and enjoyed rain or shine.  Come follow us on our journey!
